Kieran Brown: Queeran, the farmer’s son

Dance

Friday 13 June

Queeran, the farmer’s son is a semi-autobiographical solo work. Inspired by Kieran Brown‘s experiences growing up rurally, farming and riding horses. Looking at how this environment has affected his sense of self and queer identity. ‘Queeran’ was a nickname given to Kieran at school and he aims to reclaim it, along with the numerous other parts that felt shamed into submission.

About Kieran Brown

Kieran is a dance artist and maker, originally from Cornwall and now based in Scotland.

His practice is rooted in the body—its movement, memory, and perspective—approaching it as an archive, a site of listening, learning, and processing. He is interested in what comes from the body in relation. The situated body.

Kieran has a particular interest in queer rurality—how identity, place, and belonging intersect, and how our environments shape us. His past solo work In the spirit of material, created in collaboration with Jessie Roberts-Smith, was developed in response to three bubble wrap garments he designed. The piece explored transformation, materiality, and the interaction of the body, nature, and the artificial—exploring becoming and inhabitation.

His performance career spans both commercial and contemporary stages—from dancing with artists like Jessie J and The Saturdays to touring internationally in TeZukA by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. He later joined Scottish Dance Theatre under the direction of Fleur Darkin and Joan Clevillé, performing in works by Damien Jalet, Sharon Eyal, Botis Seva, Rosemary Lee, J Neve Harrington, Emanuel Gat, and Colette Sadler, to name a few.

He is currently training to become a Focusing-Oriented Professional and is an Associate Artist with Scottish Dance Theatre.
