Ewan Douglas is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Forfar, Scotland. Ewan’s sculptural work explores the often-paradoxical nature of identity and stereotype, and the effects of place on perception.
For Hidden Door’s 2025 Festival, Ewan presents three pieces:
‘In A Town Near You’ – the ubiquity of methadone within our communities is normalised, with the rotating neon sign suggesting a commercial level of acceptance.
‘Herd Mentality’, combines two conflicting representations of Scotland: Highland cows and neds. The five furry figures huddled together create a looming presence, as if planning nefarious deeds to alleviate their boredom, hemmed in by their environment, strewn with empty bottles of Buckfast.
Appearing publicly for the first time at the Hidden Door Festival, ‘Feeder’ is his newest work. This large bird feeder serves as a metaphor for a nation’s ideals of unity, care and tolerance. However, this structure is less than inviting, with spikes protruding from every available resting place alluding to the contradictions inherent in political rhetoric and societal systems, particularly as they relate to immigration and the plight of refugees.
