Bikini Body

If you like the danceable punk of ESG, Viagra Boys, Squid and Liquid Liquid and vocals inspired by the likes of the Slits, Bush Tetras and X Ray Spex, then Bikini Body is for you. ‘Dancier than Post-Punk and Punkier than dance’ is the mantra of this Funk informed Post-Punk group.

“electrifying live shows – a dance-ready outfit, equal parts heft and funk” – The Wee Review

When Bikini Body first forged post gutter skunk funk in the fires of Edinburgh’s musical underbelly in 2019, little did they know the power it would come to wield.

“a propulsive set, mixing post-punk with funk. Their enthusiasm was infectious, their musicianship dazzling, their lyrics full of biting social commentary. They exceeded all my expectations.” – Russell Foxall, In Common

Since then they have; played shows across the UK with Mdou Moctar, Pictish Trail, Deadletter, Los Bitchos and Pussy Riot; toured Scotland with The Bug Club; and headlined stages at Manchester Psych Fest and Kelburn Garden Party. Audiences across the UK have resonated with their post gutter skunk funk, even if Bikini Body themselves don’t entirely know what it means.

“The punk funk vibes are an utter joy” – God Is In The TV

In the last year they have put music out on DevilDuck Records and Optimo Music Rocks, a new offshoot label from legendary Glasgow label Optimo Music.

“Sparky, spoken-word verses overlay pacy bass and jagged guitar-driven songs” – The Scotsman

How would you describe your music in 5 words?

    Punky, Dancey, Groovy, Loud, …Something!

How do you feel about performing in a disused Paper Factory on a 15.5 acre site on the western edge of Scotland’s capital??

As big fans of paper, we couldn’t be more excited. For real though, we love that Hidden Door takes over these weird and wonderful spaces and we can’t wait to see what they’ve done with it!

Which song provides the best introduction to those unfamiliar with you?

Our newest track, The News! A post punk thrasher with a bossa nova twist, gang vocals and parrots. What’s not to like?

        Any exciting plans for 2025?

We’re playing Optimo (Espacio)’s Watching Trees down in Wiltshire at the end of May and then we’re focusing on writing for a week at PRAH studios in Margate in October. There’s some more gigs in the works so keep your eyes peeled!

What’s one interesting fact about you that we need to know?

We cut our teeth at the legendary open mic at Henry’s Cellar Bar (RIP), our favourite venue ever. We performed under the name Lady Zinfandel and the Barony Bois. Support your local grassroots venue! You never know who or what may emerge from them.
