German horror classic returns to life with live soundtrack

We’re excited to confirm the film that will be centrepiece of our 2018 Live Soundtrack event. The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, from 1920, is widely considered to be the world’s first horror film – an undeniable masterpiece which set the template for today’s scary movies, noirs and thrillers. It be be accompanied with a live score from six acclaimed electronic composers and musicians, each bringing a fresh, innovative take on the classic.

The sights and sounds of this totally unique event will fill every corner the old Leith Theatre, resurrected by Hidden Door last year and now well on its way to becoming one of Scotland’s best live music venues. It is presented as part of a special evening curated in partnership with The Skinny, which culminates in a rousing live set from electronic producer Makeness.

“Nearly a century old, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is still a mind-bending knockout” says Jamie Dunn, Film Editor at The Skinny. “This is German Expressionism at its most sinister, with every frame of this influential horror classic suggesting fear and madness. We can’t wait to hear what this line-up of electronic artists come up with to accompany the film’s nightmarish set design of crooked streets, warped walls and twisted staircases.”

David Martin, Creative Director of Hidden Door, adds: “The six musicians lined up to play the live soundtrack for this event are some of the best, most creative and innovative electronic composers and performers working in Scotland today. The idea of responding to the look, feel and themes of this early cinematic masterpiece, and creating a non-stop sonic landscape that takes the atmosphere of the film and amplifies it into an overpowering immersive experience is going to be absolutely epic!

“It will be unique, it will be brave, and with the “old” being brought to life by the “new”, this event will be quintessential Hidden Door”.

The artists performing the live soundtrack are The Reverse Engineer, Midi Paul, Matthew Collings, WOLF, Heir of the Cursed and HQFU.
