We are proud to reveal that we have won funding from Leith Chooses – a community fund which goes to local projects voted on by the people of Leith.
Anyone aged 8+ who lives, works or volunteers in Leith could vote – voting opened on Saturday 3 March at a special open day at Leith Community Centre (Kirkgate), followed by a fortnight of online voting.
As a non-profit, volunteer run arts organisation, every penny we make goes straight into running our annual multi-arts festival.
With Leith Chooses funding, we plan to offer a range of community workshops in different creative fields – theatre, spoken word, drama, creative writing and visual art – as well as offering accessible tours, community reminiscence sessions and a screening of archive film footage of Leith.
The workshops will be free to attend and will be an opportunity for people across the community to meet each other, making and strengthening connections in Leith. Work produced by the participants of the workshops will be showcased during the festival itself, celebrating the people who are part of Leith and their creativity.
The aim is to open up Hidden Door to the wider community, engage with locals who may not traditionally take part in arts projects, and make the 2018 festival more accessible than ever – with guided tours for visitors with sight and hearing impairments or other disabilities.
We also intend to bring sessions to local nursing homes and support facilities including Link Up Women’s Group and InchKeith House, to engage people in the community who may not otherwise be able to access the festival.
Hidden Door is a non-profit, volunteer run arts festival which brings forgotten and abandoned spaces back to life with art, music, theatre, dance, spoken word, cinema and more. Hidden Door 2018 will take place from 25 May – 3 June, both at Leith Theatre and the old State Cinema.
