Chats with Selected Artist-Beckmann and Odling

Artist Name: Morven Odling and Emily Beckmann

Question 1: How did you get to where you are now?

EB: Through continually repeating cycles of striving and defeat, with joyous periods of acceptance.

MO: By persistently reiterating sequences of struggling and setback, with blissful interludes of clarity.
Question 2: What is your thought process and/or the material process behind your work?

EB: I prioritise feeling. I trust the movements of my body and the workings of my subconscious mind.

MO: I prefer emotional response. I have faith in the motions of my physicality and the mechanisms of my subliminal self.

Question 3: Have you ever got halfway through with a project or idea and changed direction and why?

EB: Change is a constant part of the process. The work knows it wants to be made, so I allow myself to be guided.

MO: Flux is a fundamental element of the creative practice. The ideas will out, so I submit to their lead.

Question 4: What is your idea for Hidden Door 2016?

EB: Desire Lands: Here we can be our best selves. A celebration of hopes, aspirations, joy and nostalgia. An acceptance of systems unraveling and fragmented wonder lust.

MO: Desire Lands: Here we can be our best selves. An exploration of faiths, expectations, euphoria and reminiscence. An approval of structures losing their order and a desire for the sublime.

From 27 May – 4 June 2016 Hidden Door will return to the amazing disused street lighting depot behind Kings Stables Road in Edinburgh. Click here for ticket info
