January 6, 2022
Hidden Door Festival 2022 will take place from 9 – 18 June at the old Royal High School in Edinburgh. We are now inviting dance artists to get involved. Apply by Monday 31 January 2022.
Hidden Door is staging a 10-day multi-arts festival in 2022 at a new location – the wonderful old Royal High School complex in the city centre. The disused spaces of the site will be transformed into live music venues and performance spaces for theatre, dance and spoken word performances, alongside pop-up bars and a multitude of art exhibition and installation spaces.
We are delighted to now be accepting submissions for our dance programme. This is an open call, inviting proposals for ambitious, innovative and experimental performances, works in development, and re-workings of shows that have already been performed.
This year’s venue is unconventional, and so we are particularly looking for non-traditionally staged work, such as multi-directional or in-the-round performances, promenade, pop-up and other experimental formats, as opposed to end-on “black-box” performances. We also welcome artists using this opportunity to re-configure work that may have previously been presented in an end-on format to these less conventional forms.
Hidden Door has a particular focus on supporting new, emerging and breakthrough talent, and particularly looks to support dancers and choreographers working at establishing their careers in Scotland. We do however love to include work from throughout the UK to make our programme as exciting as possible, and we welcome submissions from dance practitioners and companies at any stage of their career and development. Those looking to develop and innovate their practice are the ones who will fit best with Hidden Door.
As a multi-arts festival running programmes of music, art, theatre, spoken word as well as dance, we aim to bring new audiences into contact with art forms that they may not be so familiar with, and so we look to build our programme around work that we feel will work well with this aim in mind. By bringing to life interesting disused spaces we work to create an exciting and accessible way for audiences to explore and discover new artistic voices in Scotland, and we strive to create high-impact, memorable events that will engage audiences and be great fun for the performers too.
Hidden Door is committed to providing fair rates of pay for all artists involved in the festival. When applying, we will ask you to provide an estimated budget and a breakdown of project costs. We’ll want to be able to see from your estimated budget that you would be paying yourself and other artists involved fairly. We will provide production for shows – lighting, sound, projection and technicians.
Please read the full details below and then complete this online form by midnight on Monday 31 January 2022.
