Sax Shaw

Selected Artist

My practice predominantly explores material processes, synthesising traditional craft with innovative technologies to form novel processes. My work holds an innate sense of function or belonging; my desire is for the viewer to question the works function, whether physical or cerebral and to create environments through installation that facilitate questioning and self-reflection. My background in stained glass introduced an admiration of traditional craft and of the physical exploration of materials which I developed through the study of contemporary processing technologies. Craft is often demoted to hobbyists and viewed as twee or kitsch; however, craft is a material process that directly reflects its maker and therefore vividly describes human response to material and the physical world; as such craft very much belongs in contemporary art culture.
