Jack Whitelock

I’m a painter currently based in Edinburgh, originally from Hull. I completed my BA in painting at the Edinburgh College of Art in 2020, and I’m now a graduate artist in residence at the Leith School of Art.

I have appeared in recent group shows at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, the Freelands Foundation Gallery, London and Fruitmarket Gallery, Hull.

My work engages in processes of collage and painting, through digital and physical mediums. Abstraction, imagery and representation are constantly revolving, as the distinctions between elements move in and out of perceptions. Themes vary and evolve, but connote to personal feelings and interpretations, lying between individual and cultural memories. A gesture can not only reveal truths, tensions and mysteries; but they can also hide from us, open up, or take hold of you. I create matted layers and windows, that obscure what was once there; to flicker between meanings and aesthetics.
