Hidden Door

Imagined Realities

One of five Creative Collaborations commissioned by Hidden Door for this year’s festival.

Imagined Realities takes us on a journey through a series of labyrinthine spaces within a 45 minute long performance by Edinburgh’s dreamy synth pop duo, MARANTA. Illusory, cinematic sets created by Chell Young host surreal appearances by characters of the Vomiton costume collective, as physical and fictional realms become entangled.

Originally born in lockdown, these projects began online as livestreams within the ‘Hidden Door Live’ series. These fantastic works have now been developed into fully realised shows that you have the opportunity to experience live in this year’s festival.

Contributors

Chell Young

Chell Young’s work interrogates architectural space in theatrical, cinematic and illusory ways. She creates intimate miniature spaces and installations that play with and alter the viewers perception through sculpture, film and sound.

Her work explores ideas of escapism and childish nostalgia which often carry darker, more uncomfortable undertones. Drawing on feelings of claustrophobia and impermanence her work often comments on present day disinformation and environmental threats.

Through surrealist environments she offers the viewer a protected space where they can escape their own reality whilst considering exciting, new and uneasy ones.

Maranta

Maranta are an electronic duo from Edinburgh. Featuring Callum Govan and Gloria Black on live synths. Maranta are influenced heavily by their love for synth exploration and poetry, as well as the luscious sonics of 80’s pop and modern, ethereal electronica. Led by Gloria’s lucid and visceral lyrics, they journey through varied sonic worlds. The music is imbued with their energy and passion and the result is vibrant, catchy songs laced with rhythm and an infectious joy.

Vomiton

Vomiton are a sustainable mask and costume collective whose motto is ‘Art made from rubbish isn’t rubbish art.’
